Biographical / Historical
Carmen Johnson (1910 - 2006) was born in Elkhorn, Wisconsin in 1910 and lived there until college where she attended State Teacher College in Illinois. During WWII, she joined the Women’s Army Corps until the end of the war. At the beginning of the Occupation, Johnson was hired in Japan as a clerk-typist. She later joined the Eighth Air Force which was in charge of the military government and worked with the Shikoku Military Government Region. She largely focused on women’s education and getting youth organizations, such as Girl Scouts, back up and running in Japan after the war.
