Father Robert R. Zahn (September 7, 1921 - December 23, 2013) was born in Mandan, North Dakota, and received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Montana in Missoula in 1943, where he was also in the ROTC program. He served in the U.S. Army starting in 1943, being sent to the Philippines as a chemical warfare officer and then to Tokyo, where he worked in civil censorship. Zahn remained in Japan with the Army until 1946, when he became a civilian employee of the government after being discharged. He left Japan in December of 1948 and entered MaryKnoll Mission in 1949, becoming ordained in 1955. Zahn's first mission was to Japan, where he remained until 1961. He returned in 1966, assigned to be the Pastor of the Matsuzaka parish. He spent his entire missionary career in Japan, remaining there for 15 years before returning to the United States in 2005. Father Zahn passed away at the age of 92.
