Special first edition on Whatman paper was limited to 250 copies, printed by Charels Whittingham and Co. The binding is printed tapestry designed by Morris and made specially for this edition. Inscribed by Morris' friend and publisher, F.S. Ellis: "P.M. Ellis with her father's fond love, Christmas 1889." Morris considered this book to be "the best-looking book issued since the 17th Century" according to Cockerell, and Forman states that "this volume treads upon the threshold of the Kelmscott Press in matter of style."
