Profile of Podzol-like soil in Kauai, Hawaii. Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Profile of Podzol-like soil at elevation of 3500 feet on northern part of Kauai. Profile has peaty surface a few inches thick, an A1 horizon 5 inches thick, a gleyed A2 horizon, and thin hard brittle ironstone sheets at 12, 18, and 26 inches. Gleyed horizons occur between 16 and 18 inches and between 18 and 26 inches (between the ironstone sheets).... Soil material is clayey and feels like kaolinite."
