Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Hilly landscape of red Latosols from agglomerate, now burned over, with a number of pits and trenches dug by the Japanese for defense of Ngardmau and the bauxite mines. The trees in foreground are in the floodplain of the Addeido River."
