National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers records

The National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers (NCSHPO) is the professional association of the state government officials who carry out the national historic preservation program as delegates of the Secretary of the Interior. The records of the NCSHPO consist of federal agency files, individual state files which contain state surveys and need assessments, congressional testimony, annual meeting minutes, conference related material, publications, and oral history recordings.

This collection is open to the public and must be used in the Special Collections reading room. Researchers must register and agree to copyright and privacy laws before using this collection.

This collection is unprocessed. This means that materials are in the same state we received them and have not been reviewed for content or condition. The collection may need to be screened prior to use. Please contact us before visiting the Special Collections reading room to view this collection. A preliminary inventory is available under the Inventories/Additional Information section.

Some oral histories are restricted. Please check the preliminary inventories for additional information. Some interviewees may decide to close access to interviews except with written permission. Interviewees will retain copyright and related rights, and may restrict online distribution or citation.

Photocopies or digital surrogates may be provided in accordance with Special Collections and University Archives duplication policy.

Copyright resides with the creators of the documents or their heirs unless otherwise specified. It is the researcher's responsibility to secure permission to publish materials from the appropriate copyright holder.

Archival materials may contain materials with sensitive or confidential information that is protected under federal and/or state right to privacy laws or other regulations. While we make a good faith effort to identify and remove such materials, some may be missed during our processing. If a researcher finds sensitive personal information in a collection, please bring it to the attention of the reading room staff.

Scope and Contents

The National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers (NCSHPO) records date from 1976-2018 and consist of federal agency files, individual state files which contain state surveys and need assessments, legislation, congressional reports, congressional testimony, annual meeting minutes, conference related material, publications, and correspondence. Publications include tourist pamphlets and brochures, books, newsletters, calendars, maps, and informational booklets about state office programming and resources. Electronic records consist of audio files for oral history interviews with NCSHPO personnel conducted by Dr. James Glass, former Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer for Indiana, for the 50th Anniversary of the NCSHPO National Historic Preservation Program.

Custodial History

The National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers began donating their records to the University of Maryland in March, 2008. There has been one subsequent textual records donation in 2019. There have been serveral subsequent donations of electronic oral history materials in 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Processing Information

The majority of textual records remain in their original order and original containers. The electronic oral history records have been rehoused in a half-hollinger box.
