Scope and Contents This series consists of photographs from the Madelo Family, primarily of group events and portraits of Madelo family members. Silverio Madelo (1903-1978) moved to the United States with his sister, Apolonia Lacre Madelo, in 1929 (1). They joined their brothers who were already living in the US: Calixto (1894-1968) in Washington, D.C., and Emiliano in Montana (2). Sarmiento Family, July 1970-December 1970

Scope and Contents Pedro Sarmiento (1905-1998) worked for the U.S. Army in the Philippines and married Cresenciana Calvelo (1908-1979) in 1931. During World War II earned a Bronze Medal and Purple Heart. He fought in the Battle of Bataan and was captured as a prisoner of war. After the war the family lived where Pedro was stationed, but settled in Chevy Chase, D.C., when he retired in 1957. Pedro and Cresenciana's son, Pedro David, Jr., was born in 1933 in Manila. Scope and Contents Silvestre Braga Brazal (1906-1995) served as a steward in the U.S. Navy beginning in 1928. Silvestre married Helen McGonagle in 1947 and they had two daughters, Elena and Monica. Helen was a founding member of the Ladies Auxiliary of V.F.W. Post #5471 and Monica later served as its president (1). Scope and Contents

This series consists of one oversized photograph of the arrival of the Philippine Independence Delegation at Union Station, Washington, D.C. on December 7, 1933. The photograph includes (among others) Rufo Panganiban, Florentine Calabia, Diosdado Yap, Nestora Calabia, Manuel Quezon, Elpidio Quirino and Honorato Lagoy (husband of Prima Lagoy). Scope and Contents Felipe Estifano MondoƱedo (1897-1986) was born in Boac, Marinduque, Philippines and enlisted in the United States Navy while living in Manila and served during World War I and World War II, including on the steel-hulled sailing bark U.S.S. Cumberland in Annapolis, Maryland during World War I (1). He became a citizen in 1944 and after the war he married Christine Helphenstine (1926-1979) (2). Washington, D.C., as the capital of the United States and the headquarters of the Philippines government in exile during World War II, saw many visits from Filipino politicians and other prominent people. This series consists of press release photographs of prominent Filipino politicians and other important Filipinos in the United States. These images were donated on April 30, 2016 by Teresa Carandang and Erwin Tiongson. The series is arranged alphabetically by item title.

Scope and Contents Jose Montano, Sr. was born on June 19, 1933 in Infanta, Pangasinan, Philippines. He enlisted in the US navy in 1955 and served for 22 years on both the East Coast and in the Pacific Fleet at Honolulu, Hawaii. After three years in Hawaii he was assigned to the White House Special Support Group in the late 1960s. He later served in Norfolk, Virginia and aboard other navy vessels.
