This collection documents the administrative activities of the President's Commission on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues between 1997 and 2011. The Commission was formed by President Kirwan in 1997 as the President's Commission for Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Issues. In 2000 the Commission was renamed the President's Commission on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues. The Commission is currently active and responsible for advising the president on policies and programs that respond to the needs of the LGBTQ community at the University of Maryland, College Park.
This collection is open to the public and must be used in the Special Collections reading room. Researchers must register and agree to copyright and privacy laws before using this collection.
This collection contains restricted material. This collection consists of the administrative records of the President’s Commission on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues from the University of Maryland at College Park from 1996 to 2011. These records include correspondence, meeting minutes and agendas, external publications, reports, studies, and program proposals.
The President’s Commission on Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Issues was formed by President Kirwan in 1997 to “recommend policies and programs to ensure that the university environment is sensitive to the needs of lesbians, gays, and bisexuals.” Kirwan formed the commission in response to a report, entitled “Embracing Diversity,” published by the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Staff and Faculty Association and the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Alliance. The report detailed the campus climate surrounding gay, lesbian, and bisexual issues and urged the president to form a commission to better respond to student, faculty, and staff needs. The commission was renamed the President’s Commission on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues (PCLGBTI) in 2000.
Folders are labeled according to the language used by the Commission at the date of material creation. The PCLGBTI consists of 20 members from across campus, including faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students. The PCLGBTI is currently active and responsible for advising the president on policies and programs that respond to the needs of the LGBTQ community at the University of Maryland, College Park. The PCLGBTI also participates in larger President’s Commission Coalition meetings and President’s Diversity Panel meetings. Administrative materials from the PCLGBTI’s participation in these meetings are also included in this collection.
The collection is organized as four series
Materials had been placed in acid-free folders and Hollinger boxes during accessioning.
During processing, existing folder titles from accesions the 2011 and 2013 were generally maintained with small additions of material. These materials were grouped into the Administrative Files series. Folder titles from the 2004 accession were re-written to better reflect the material. These materials were grouped into the Curriculum, Events, and Publications series. Some materials from this accession were shifted into the Administrative Materials series. Within series and sub-series materials were sorted by date. Publications with more than two copies were weeded from the collection.
