Biographical / Historical

The Consortium on Race, Gender and Ethnicity (CRGE) is a university-wide, interdisciplinary research organization and academic unit at the University of Maryland, College of Arts and Humanities. Its mission centers on research, mentorship, and collaboration to uncover, understand, and prompt intersectional scholarship on race, gender, ethnicity, and other spheres of identities and communities and how they affect, reinforce, and influence one another. CRGE aims to examine the “dimensions of inequality through the lived experiences of historically underrepresented minorities” to support underrepresented minority scholars through outreach, mentoring, and education and research experiences.

CRGE was founded by University of Maryland Professors, Drs. Bonnie Thornton Dill and Ruth Enid Zambrana in 1998 to support the growing field of intersectional scholarship. Major research projects include the CRGE Interdisciplinary Scholarship Program (CrISP), a two-year graduate fellowship program (2002), the Qualitative Research Interest Group (QRIG), a grant submission and funding working group in collaboration with the Maryland Population Research Center (2012), and the Intersectional Qualitative Research Methods Institute (IQRMI), a week-long program (2017).

In addition to these major projects, CRGE has hosted forums and symposiums related to race, gender, ethnicity, social justice, and other dimensions of inequality. CRGE provides, through its website, resources for intersectional scholarship and bibliographies via its Intersectional Research Database along with annual publications, Research Connections and Intersection & Inequality.

In recognition of CRGE’s work, CRGE has received the National Council for Research on Women (NCRW) Research and Scholarship Award for “outstanding research that advances knowledge and understanding of women and girls in society (2010)” and the President’s Commission on Ethnic Minority Issues (PCEMI) Non-Instructional Unit Service Minority Achievement Award for “outstanding accomplishments and contributions (2017).”
