This collection consists of 22 handwritten letters during Tilden Simpers' enlistment in the sixth Maryland Infantry Regiment during the Civil War from 1862-1865. Primary topics include his early service, his correspondence with his wife, Elisa Simpers, George R. Howard, G.W. Wapon, Milton N. Taylor, Theodore Dodd, C. H. Harrington, J. Huly, M.E. Mitchell, and others. Topics include his work as a surgeon and affairs within his home during his absence.

Charles Tilden Simpers (also found spelled "Sempers" in various sources) was born in April, 1821 in North East Cecil County, Maryland. He enlisted August 21, 1862, as Assistant Surgeon and was commissioned into field and staff of the 6th Maryland Infantry Regiment in the Civil War. He was captured at the second Battle of Winchester, Virginia, June 15, 1863 while attending the wounded. He was confined in Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia, where he arrived on June 25, 1863. Simpers was exchanged in November, 1863 and eventually rejoined his unit and was promoted to surgeon on December 22, 1863. He was mustered out, or discharged, on October 26, 1864 and returned home to Cecil County, Maryland where he practiced medicine for many years. He died in April of 1903 and is buried at Saint Mark's Episcopal Church Cemetery in Perryville, Maryland.
