Scope and Contents Asuncion Santos and her five-year-old sister Fermina moved from the Philippines to Washington, D.C. in 1915. Fermina married Mariano Peji and they opened several restaurants, including the Light House Café in Portsmouth, Virginia. Asuncion married Generoso Gaudiel and adopted Doris Eleanor Relucio (1926-2001), whom they renamed Amparing Santos Gaudiel. Scope and Contents Pedro Sarmiento (1905-1998) worked for the U.S. Army in the Philippines and married Cresenciana Calvelo (1908-1979) in 1931. During World War II earned a Bronze Medal and Purple Heart. He fought in the Battle of Bataan and was captured as a prisoner of war. After the war the family lived where Pedro was stationed, but settled in Chevy Chase, D.C., when he retired in 1957. Pedro and Cresenciana's son, Pedro David, Jr., was born in 1933 in Manila. Scope and Contents Silvestre Braga Brazal (1906-1995) served as a steward in the U.S. Navy beginning in 1928. Silvestre married Helen McGonagle in 1947 and they had two daughters, Elena and Monica. Scope and Contents Felipe Estifano Mondoñedo (1897-1986) was born in Boac, Marinduque, Philippines and enlisted in the United States Navy while living in Manila and served during World War I and World War II, including on the steel-hulled sailing bark U.S.S.
