Series Description

This series contains correspondence between Raymond Haggh and Hilde Wentzlaff-Eggebert, as well as correspondence between them and their respective family members and miscellaneous items related to their correspondence, both dated and undated. Haggh and Wentzlaff-Eggebert recount the day-to-day goings on of their respective lives, including the situation in Berlin, as well as discussing philosophical topics, music, poetry, literature, art, dance, drama, and film; after Haggh’s written proposal much of the correspondence details the process of receiving approval for Wentzlaff-Eggebert to be married to Haggh and preparations for Wentzlaff-Eggebert’s departure. Letters are primarily in English, with some in German. Letters from Haggh’s and Wentzlaff-Eggebert’s family members appear after the date of Haggh’s proposal and include introductions and communications of mutual good-will, as letters from Wentzlaff-Eggebert’s mother (and extended family) after her departure update her as to the situation in Berlin, her mother’s well-being, and her father’s situation. Letters from Haggh’s family are in English, while letters from Wentzlaff-Eggebert’s mother and relatives are in German. Materials are arranged chronologically.
