Drafts and proofs, 1942-1969~
Record Group VI, Series 3 contains materials related to the early publication operations of Notes with articles and advertisements in manuscript, typescript, and printer galley proof formats. Additional materials include issue mock-ups, original artwork, galley proofs, advertisement proofs, photographs, negatives, and drafts of unpublished articles. Nearly all documents in this series are heavily annotated by Richard S. Hill, William Lichtenwanger, article authors, and business owners who placed advertisement orders. Correspondence and memos between authors, business owners, and MLA board members with Hill and Lichtenwanger have been kept with their respective articles if originally found together. Such correspondence relates to records in Series 1. Comparisons of records in Series 3 to respective final publications in Series 4 reveals the creative and editorial processes of Notes staff and contributors, as well as timetables for scholarly solicitation and production.
