General
This sub-group contains jointly maintained correspondence, subject, and committee files of MLA’s 19th through 24th Presidents: H. Wiley Hitchcock, Frank Campbell, Walter Gerboth, William McClellan, James Pruett, and Clara Steuermann. This sub-group reveals collaborative record keeping over the course of presidential terms, as well as the broad involvement of presidents in MLA committees during their terms in office. Documents include handwritten and typed correspondence, clippings, photographs, copies of grant applications, and annotated drafts of reports and scholarship produced by MLA committees and regional chapters. Steuermann’s activities with IAML after her term as MLA President are also represented. Elizabeth Olmstead, MLA Vice-President under Gerboth, is additionally represented in committee records of this sub-series, as is MLA Secretary Helen Joy Sleeper. Olmstead’s documents include the original correspondence and contract related to MLA’s publication Catalog of Cards for Printed Music published by Rowman and Littlefield. There is also extensive documentation of MLA’s participation in the 1974 International Conference on New Musical Notation in Belgium and MLA’s collaborative publication with the New York Public Library of the Index of New Musical Notation.
