Records of Clara Steuermann, 1971 -1981
This sub-group contains correspondence and subject files of MLA’s 24th President, Clara Steuermann. Materials relate to her activities before, during, and after her term as MLA President. Records include her files for MLA Board meetings, active participation in IAML, and correspondence with later MLA Presidents Dena Epstein and Ruth Watanabe. Materials about MLA meetings include correspondence and drafts related to convention planning and officer elections. Documents of note prior to Steuermann’s presidency include annotated drafts for an MLA workshop on music binding given by Steuermann and Ingrid Loebel in 1972. An annotated draft for a speech given by Steuermann to the Southern California Chapter in 1979 is also in this sub-group.

Use and Access to Collection
The collection is open for research use. Materials from this collection must be used in the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library's Irving and Margery Morgan Lowens Special Collections Room during SCPA’s operating hours. Arrangement
Library of Congress accession in original order, followed by Accessions 82-10-MLA and 86-90-MLA in original order. Documents from two separate boxes accessioned from Library of Congress were combined when records were determined to have share creation and use; order of folders remains original.
Custodial History
Documents in Box 48-MLA were transferred from the Library of Congress in 1982. Accession 82-10-MLA was donated by Bennet Ludden to the University of Maryland in 1982. Accession 86-90-MLA was donated by Geraldine Ostrove to the University of Maryland in 1986.
