This collection contains materials related to performances and events occurring at The University of Maryland's Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, also known as The Clarice. Materials in this collection range from programs, brochures, pamphlets, guides, bookmarks, and posters related to events hosted at The Clarice, as well as cards and letters to donors. There are also various clippings and full issues of newspapers and magazines whose writings center around events that occurred at The Clarice. These items were created between 1994 to the present.

The collection is open for research use. Materials from this collection must be used in the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library's Irving and Margery Morgan Lowens Special Collections Room during SCPA’s operating hours. Content Description

The collection is arranged into six series, with various sub-series. Series and sub-series include recordings, programs, booklets, brochures, pamphlets, guides, calendars, bookmarks, press kit, posters and fliers, cards, donor letters and packages, photos, handouts, emails and surveys, newspapers, and periodicals. The materials relate to various music performances, theatrical works, and lectures that occurred at the center. These events were arranged by The Clarice and/or feature the UMD School of Music, UMD School of Theatre Dance and Performance Studies, Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library, Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the National Orchestral Institute + Festival. Materials range from 1994 to the present.

Biographical / Historical

The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland, also known as the Clarice, opened in 2001. It contains six performance venues — Dekelboum Concert Hall, the Kay Theatre, the Gildenhorn Recital Hall, the Dance Theater, the Kogod Theatre, the Cafritz Foundation Theater, and the Smith Lecture Hall. Some of the organizations that host events at the Clarice, ranging from music performances to theatrical works to lectures, are the UMD School of Music, UMD School of Theater Dance and Performance Studies (TDPS), the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, National Orchestral Institute + Festival, and Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. These groups invite visiting or touring artists, as well as students and faculty from UMD programs.

Custodial History

These materials have been continually transferred to the University of Maryland's Special Collections in Performing Arts by The Clarice's administrative staff since the Clarice opened in 2001.
