Biographical / Historical

Carl Bjerregaard holds degrees from Western Michigan University and Michigan State University. His public school experience includes Montague High School and Muskegon High School, both in Michigan. While at Muskegon, he was one of the founders of Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.

In 1967, Bjerregaard was asked to form a wind ensemble at Western Michigan University and was named Director of Bands from 1970-1976. He became the Director of Bands at Florida State University in 1976, where he remained until his retirement in 1993. His high school and university bands have performed at prestigious musical events including the Midwest Band Clinic in Chicago, regional and national NAfME conferences, College Band Directors National Association conferences, and American School Band Directors Association conventions. His performing groups have made professional recordings and have aired on NPR's "Performance Today."

Throughout his career, Bjerregaard championed chamber music. During his time at Florida State University, he developed a unique chamber music program for all incoming undergraduate wind players, coached by graduate performance majors.
