Reynaldo Reyes was an internationally recognized concert pianist, and a distinguished educator. He taught at Towson University for over 50 years, and continued to teach and perform up until his death at 82 years old. Reyes was born in the Philippines in 1933. He was a child prodigy, attending the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music in Manila at the age of 13, while dual-enrolled in high school.
By 1951, Reyes had earned a Bachelor’s degree and moved to Paris, having won a scholarship to continue his studies at the Conservatoire Nationale Superieur de Musique; he later won the Premier Prix du Piano in 1957. In 1958, Reyes moved to Baltimore and began study at the Peabody Conservatory with Mieczyslaw Munz and Leon Fleisher, earning his Master’s degree and Artist’s Diploma there by 1960.
In 1962, Reyes joined the faculty of Towson University, and stayed there until his death. He was a master teacher by many students’ accounts, leaving lasting impressions on those that studied with him. Reyes’ students went on to win many major competitions, obtain faculty positions, and start acclaimed community music programs.
In addition to his legacy as a teacher, Reyes was a gifted and decorated performer. He won many prestigious contests, including the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Internationale Piano Competition in Paris, the International Piano Competition in Bolzano, Italy and the International Piano competition in Rio de Janeiro. He performed all over the world, concertizing for over 50 years.
