John Crown was an English-born American pianist, renowned as a soloist and educator. Crown studied with Moritz Rosenthal in Vienna, and the two corresponded regularly. Crown taught as a member of the piano faculty at the University of Southern California for many years, and maintained a notable performance career as well. The John Crown Collection at IPAM houses Crown’s correspondence with Rosenthal, as well as transcriptions of letters from important musicians to Josef Dachs, a relative of Crown. Paper files relating to Rosenthal and Crown respectively are also included.
