The Beatles were an English rock band that formed in Liverpool in 1960 and eventually became one of the best selling artists worldwide. The Fab Four was comprised of John Lennon (1940-1980), Paul McCartney (b. 1942), George Harrison (1943-2001), and Ringo Starr (b. 1940). After disbanding in 1970, all four members had successful solo careers. This collection consists of books, serials, clippings, sheet music, and memorabilia related to this band. Collected by Hugo A. Keesing, a professor at the University of Maryland and a popular culture scholar, the collection covers the period from the 1950 through the 2007, with the bulk between 1963 and 1980, and again from 1990-2000. The collection has been separated into eight series, from both during the band's active career and after the group disbanded.

Scope and Content of Collection

The Hugo Keesing collection on The Beatles consists of realia, ephemera, recordings, magazines, books, newspaper clippings, and sheet music relating to The Beatles, dating from 1950 to 2007. The bulk of the materials date from 1963-1980 and from 1990-2000. This collection includes collectible merchandise which dates from the 1960s, when the Beatles were active. Some of the magazines, newspaper clippings, and books are contemporaneous with the group's career, while others are in the form of tributes and remembrances from after the group disbanded. There are a significant number of magazines and newspaper clippings related to John Lennon's death in 1980. The sheet music series consists of well-known popular songs recorded by The Beatles, most of which were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

The Beatles, a band from Liverpool, England, consisted of John Lennon (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Paul McCartney (vocals, bass guitar, guitar, keyboards, drums), Ringo Starr (drums, percussion, vocals), and George Harrison (guitar, sitar, vocals). The band was active from 1960 to 1970. The group released twelve studio albums, thirteen EPs, and twenty-two singles in the United Kingdom between 1962 and 1970, various versions of which were sold internationally. The Beatles also produced five films between 1964 and 1970.

The appearance of "The Fab Four" on the Ed Sullivan Show in the United States in 1964 shortly followed their first American album, Meet the Beatles, and was viewed by over 70 million people, launching a period of "Beatlemania" in the United States. The large number of Beatles-related merchandise, including clothing, posters, books, dolls and other collectibles demonstrates the group's profound influence on popular culture. Additionally, the arrival of the Beatles in the United States helped open the American market to other British groups, including the Rolling Stones and the Kinks, cultivating the "British Invasion."

The Beatles' musical style changed throughout their career, including, at various times, elements of skiffle, beat, rock and roll, pop, psychedelic rock, Indian music, folk, and Western Classical music. In 1966, the Beatles stopped touring and instead experimented with innovative recording techniques and use of technology. The shift from a popular touring group to an experimental studio band is highlighted by the landmark 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, as well as several other groundbreaking works.

After disbanding, each member of the band pursued careers as solo performers. Lennon was shot and killed in December 1980 and Harrison died of lung cancer in November 2001. McCartney and Starr continue to perform today.
