The American Society for Theatre Research is a professional, nonprofit organization that promotes research in the field of theatre history. The archives contains materials relating to the structure of the society, the initiatives of the committees, the publications, the annual conference, affiliated organizations and joint conferences, and the history of the society.

Use and Access to Collection

Portions of series 1, 2, 3, and 4 are restricted until 2027 or 2039. The collection is otherwise open for research use. Materials from this collection must be used in the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library's Irving and Margery Morgan Lowens Special Collections Room during SCPA’s operating hours. Please contact the curator for an appointment or if you have questions related to digital access of the materials.

Copyright was not transferred to the University of Maryland with the gift of any copyrighted materials. All rights remain with the creators and rights holders. The University of Maryland Libraries is granted permission for the use in scholarly research by the Libraries’ patrons under fair use in Section 107 of the U.S. Copyright Act.

Scope and Content of Collection

The American Society for Theatre Research records contain materials relating to this organization from 1956-2011, with the bulk of material coming from 1970-2004. The collection consists of personal and professional papers, including published and unpublished writings, correspondence, reports, as well as materials relating to membership, the annual conference, publications, the society's structure, and initiatives with affiliated organizations. The collection represents the involvement of the officers and committees, as well as various organizations, including the American Council of Learned Societies, the International Research and Exchanges Board, the International Federation for Theatre Research, the Theatre Library Association, the National Humanities Alliance, and the Modern Language Association.

Custodial History and Acquisition Information

Donated by The American Society for Theatre Research to the University of Maryland Libraries beginning in March 2002. Collection was transferred from the Department of Theatre of Long Island University - C.W. Post.
