Paul Lehman papers

Paul R. Lehman, Professor of Music Education, has taught in the public schools of Ohio and at the University of Colorado, the University of Kentucky, the Eastman School of Music, and the University of Michigan. He has also held an appointment as music specialist with the United States Department of Education in Washington. He has served the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), now known as the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), as chair of the National Commission on Instruction (NCI) and the Music Education Research Council; as a member of the editorial committee and as book review editor of the Journal of Research in Music Education; and as national president (1984-86). Active as a consultant and lecturer, he is the author of more than 200 articles, reviews, and other publications on curriculum, assessment, teacher education, and education standards. He has coordinated the recent effort to develop national standards for music instruction in the nation's elementary and secondary schools. Included in the colleciton are Correspondence, papers related to Lehman's work with ISME, CMS, NCI and MENC, Lehman's publications and miscellaneous items.

Scope and Contents of Collection

The Paul Lehman papers cover the period from 1942 to 2000. The collection consists of personal and professional correspondence, papers related to Lehman's work with the International Society for Music Education (ISME), College Music Society, National Commission of Instruction, and MENC, publications and tests related to Lehman's work as amusic educator, consultant and lecturer. Only a portion of Lehman’s papers are included in this collection. A majority of these materials were destroyed by flooding in the basement of his home during his absence in 1999.
