The University of Maryland Department of Dance records covers the period from 1971-2007; the bulk of the material date from 1971 to 1990. The collection consists of programs from Department of Dance performances and periodical clippings related to the department. This collection features productions directed and supervised by University of Maryland Department of Dance faculty, including Dorothy Madden, Anne Warren, and Larry Warren.
The Department of Dance was first established as a separate department within the College of Arts and Sciences in 1967. The University of Maryland had previously offered a major and a minor in dance through the Department of Health and Physical Education. The founding chair of the department was Dorothy Madden, who had also served as the University of Maryland's first dance instructor. Madden taught at the University of Maryland from 1948 until 1977, serving as chair of the department from its creation until 1972. In 2010, the department was part of an academic reorganization resulting in the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies, a resident unit of the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, and exists administratively within the College of Arts and Humanities.
