Abstract Andrew Pettis (1906-1987) joined the carpentry crew at a Portland, Maine, shipyard in 1939 and rose through the ranks to become shop steward and, when the yard unionized in 1942, president of Local 50 of the Industrial Union of Marine and Shipbuilding Workers of America (IUMSWA).
