Scope and Contents

Series 5 consists of material relating to specific strikes conducted by federal labor unions during 1953-1954. The files contain Meany's official sanction of particular strikes and also correspondence relating to strike circumstances, conditions, and settlements. Payment or strike benefits is a frequent topic amoung the various correspondents who include local FLU officers and AFL regional organizers.

Scope and Contents

This series includes letters exchanged by officers of the federation and officers of affiliated unions pertaining to general AFL and AFL-CIO policy matters and to such specific matters as organizing drives, strike settlements, and jurisdictional disputes. In some cases particular subjects appear as sub-headings (e.g., the 1953 disaffiliation of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters of particular NLRB decisions).

Scope and Contents Includes images of Murray from his years of involvement with the United Mine Workers (UMW), as head of the United Steel Workers of America (USWA), 1936-1952, his involvement with the Committee for Industrial Organization, and as the president of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), 1940-1952. Scope and Contents The Information Department transferred these images to the Archives in 1982 and 1996. Department staff acquired the images from various press sources (e.g., Merkle, Ransdell, Acme, World Wide, UPI, etc.) and from independent photographers.
