Rows of ripening barley near Ueno Park in northern Tokyo. Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "A ripening field of barley planted in rows about 12 inches apart in the flood plain of a small stream along the edge of Ueno park, northern Tokyo. The low hill capped by trees marks the edge of the park."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "The mats of rice straw and the scaffolding of bamboo poles around a bomb-damaged building right next to the Imperial Hotel, Tokyo. Some of the larger mats are of bamboo canes. Scaffolding is fastened together with rope made from rice straw."
