Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Large group of men and women trying to catch fish in schools in waters offshore from Makiya, a village along the coast a short way north of Motobu peninsula. About 4 men hold a net and the others try to frighten the fish into it, apparently with little success."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Okinawan women and girls, with a few small boys, out on the reef vest of the sea wall around Shioya at extreme low tide hunting for shellfish, seaweed, and other living organisms suitable for food or compost. The reef is largely bare."
