Hillside trench dug by Japanese soldiers, April 28, 1948
Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "One trench in the system dug by the Japanese on a hill about ½ mile south of Nakajin, northern Motobu peninsula. This is a rounded area of Red Podzolic soil from marine sediments and commands a view of much of the fringing plain."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Hilly uplands, partly Regosols from calcareous clays and partly Reddish Brown Lateritic soils from limestones, lying north of Rykom, as seen from guest house hill. The near road is largely on Regosols which have a few tilled patches and much grass. Quonset huts are a monitoring station."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Part of the old Japanese logging road, with Joe Vaden, along which the profiles of Red Yellow Podzolic soils from marine sediments were photographed (H60). This shows the pines, ferns, and other plants which cover most coastal areas where cutting has been heavy and fire frequent."

A deforested slope near Kawata, Okinawa. Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "A slope of Lithosols from sandstones and phyllites, which has been cut and probably burned as well. The present vegetation consists of grass and brush, the latter including some small pine reproduction and bamboo, except for the clump of big pines that somehow escaped axe and fire. This is near the site of H77."

The area is largely in forest, some cultivation."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "The dissected land surface of the old marine terrace northwest of Ishikawa with one of the outliers of the mountains in the distance. This shows mainly the Red and Yellow Podzolic soils from marine sediments and the poor stands of forest reproduction on the. Some tea plantations lie at the foot of the distant mountain."
