Landscape of northeast Toguchi, October 21, 1947
Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Landscape northeast of Toguchi with sweet potatoes on Brown Forest soil from limestone in foreground and hillside of Reddish-Brown Lateritic soil from greenstone, all in cultivation, in distance. Hillside is terraced and no rock outcrops appear. The road in the distance goes up to small basin 200 meters above sea level in distance of 1¼ miles, calls for low range on the jeep part of the way."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Well established rice seedlings after transplanting to the tamboes on a gently sloping alluvial fan halfway between Tiara and Nago, eastern Motobu peninsula, Okinawa. There are banana trees around the thatched houses at the foot of the mountain slope which is terraced and largely in sweet potatoes."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "The village of Tamenato across an arm of Shana Wan (Shioya Minato?) and before the terraced slope of Lithosols from phyllites and sandstones, now largely in sweet potatoes. This village has a large number of tile roofs because it was hardly touched by war."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Tilled patches in crop among limestone outcrops in the foreground, cultivated soils from schist in middle distance, and the "castle" on Ie Shima beyond the water. This is near the village of Hamasaki, west-central Motobu peninsula. The surf was breaking hard and the sea was generally rough."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Ibu Dake, a mountain peak not far inland north of the village of Ada, Okinawa, and the valley leading up to it. The slopes within sight are mainly Lithosols but there are some Red and Yellow Podzolic soils from marine sediments. The terraced areas are mainly in sweet potatoes, but there are some other dry-land crops."
