Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Red Podzolic soil from cherty limestone and clay slate in a cut along the road from Nago to Izumi, Motobu peninsula. This is on a hilly slope about 2 miles northwest of a small village, probably Yamanuwabara, and about 3 1/2 miles northwest of Nago. The auger is 42 inches long."

This is in a cut along an old Japanese logging road, now abandoned. The soil is largely dry. Spade is 42 inches long."
