Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "An Okinawan woman carrying firewood in a bundle on her head, coming out of the mountains in central Motobu peninsula on one of the trails. The clothes are normal working garb."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "An Okinawan cutting a squared log into boards, 1/4-1/2 inches thick, by hand near Nakawoshi or Nakajin, Motobu peninsula. The log is squared or hewn with an axe."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "The quonset hut in which we lived in Shioya, Okinawa as seen from the sea wall before it. The trailer with drinking water, the shelter for the generator, and a 3/4-ton truck (weapons carrier) are in the foreground. Native houses and a small-hill with a simple shrine are in the background."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Part of the village of Shioya where the cement foundations from the Navy quonset huts remain. The framework and thatch of the house in the foreground were completed yesterday and today, a canvas covering is now being put over the walls and the family will sleep there tonight. Other houses appear beyond this one."

Papaya tree to right, castor bean to the left, chickens in yard."
