Edge of a rice paddy at the start of harvest, July 9, 1947
Closeup of a rice paddy, or "tambo." Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "The edge of a rice paddy where the harvest has been started, showing the water present and the hanging heads of grain. This tambo is in a small basin in the region of the Shimajiri marl about a mile south of the site of Shuri, Okinawa."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Well established rice seedlings after transplanting to the tamboes on a gently sloping alluvial fan halfway between Tiara and Nago, eastern Motobu peninsula, Okinawa. There are banana trees around the thatched houses at the foot of the mountain slope which is terraced and largely in sweet potatoes."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Sweet potato slips on ridges in bedded rice paddies near Taira, Motobu peninsula, with beds about 24 inches high and 42 inches apart from crest to crest. Other paddies which will be used for rice again this year lie in the distance."
