Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "One leg of brilliant rainbow near the village of Taira, Motobu peninsula. The house with thatched roof stands on Reddish-Brown Lateritic soils from colluvium, etc., and the terraced slopes to its right are on the Acid Lithosols from sandstones and phyllites."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Sweet potato slips on ridges in bedded rice paddies near Taira, Motobu peninsula, with beds about 24 inches high and 42 inches apart from crest to crest. Other paddies which will be used for rice again this year lie in the distance."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "One of the better kept isolated homes near Taira across the island from Shana Wan, with clipped thatch roof, hibiscus hedge in bloom, yellow flowered and large-fruited squash on arbor, sugar cane to right, tapioca to left, and cutover hillside in the back. The grandmother with the baby in the opening is heading back into the house."
