Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "The abrupt boundary between limestone and the soil above it in the cut of a quarry near the village of Jahanna, western Motobu peninsula. This is Brown Forest soil from limestone. A small basket stands beside the wheat growing on the soil to the left."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Lithosols from phyllite, of the more yellow variety of profiles, in an area several miles east of Kawata, across the island from Shana Wan, and near the end of the logging road that falls short of the village of Takee. Thickness of soil over weathering rock ranges from 8 to 14 inches."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Red Podzolic soil from cherty limestone and clay slate in a cut along the road from Nago to Izumi, Motobu peninsula. This is on a hilly slope about 2 miles northwest of a small village, probably Yamanuwabara, and about 3 1/2 miles northwest of Nago. The auger is 42 inches long."
