Profile of Red Podzolic soil from marine sediments, closeup, October 22, 1947
Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Red Podzolic soil from marine sediments in terraces about ½ mile east of Kawata and ¼ mile inland, across the island to the southeast from Shana Wan. This is in a cut along an old Japanese logging road, now abandoned. The soil is largely dry. Spade is 42 inches long."

This profile grades into the slightly weathered rock, is under grass, and allows slips readily. A tiling spade to show scale has 16" blade."
