Abstract Donald R. McNeil (1923-1996), founder of the National Public Broadcasting Archives at the University of Maryland, worked much of his life in academia. He was chancellor of the University of Wisconsin's extension services from 1965 to 1968. In 1968, McNeil received the first Emmy given to a public television station (WHA-TV) for his series "Pretty Soon Runs Out," a forum on integration and race relations.
