Abstract Johannes M. Burgers (1895-1981) was a Dutch mathematician and physical scientist who held a variety of scientific positions in the Netherlands before emigrating to the United States in 1955. In the U.S. he held the position of research professor at the Institute for Fluid Dynamics and Applied Mathematics, later the Institute for Physical Science and Technology, at the University of Maryland, College Park, from 1955 until his retirement in 1965.
