Contests, 1937-1939

 Sub-Series

This subseries contains materials submitted by listeners from two contests Vox Pop held. In 1937 Vox Pop asked for information on where to find "Cigar Store" or "wooden Indians." These terms refer to life size wooden sculptures of Native Americans which were commonly used as advertisements for tobacco stores in the 19th and early 20th century. The material in the series reflects the listener responses and includes letters, telegrams, newspaper clippings, and photographs. This material is arranged in chronological order.

In 1938 Vox Popsponsored a contest for the best original women's hat design and asked listeners to send in their ideas. They were looking for the "most sensible" hat and the "goofiest" one. The submissions are included in this series. The winners were published in the January 17, 1939, issue of Look magazine.
