Provisional Metal Workers' Council, 1942-1957
This organization was formed by twelve locals of the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers who withdrew from the international and established the Provisional Metal Workers' Council (PMC) to oversee their affairs until they reaffiliated with the Congress of Industrial Organizations (C.I.O.) or some other appropriate union. The IUMSWA actively supported the council in its attempts to ward off infiltration by the American Federation of Labor (A. F. of L.) and encouraged these locals' affiliation. Files documenting this relationship consist of correspondence, reports, newsletters, newspaper clippings, and organizers' records. In addition there is a significant run of files covering individual PMC locals and negotiations between four of the locals and various employers. Arrangement is primarily alphabetical by record type.
