Other Individuals, 1862-1865 and undated

 Series 9

This series consists of twelve letters and records created or used by various Union and Confederate soldiers who were at Point Lookout during the war. There is one pay record for Fredrick Glazer, a laborer in Hammond Hospital. One letter is from Union soldier Cyrus Sprouls. There is also one letter written by Quarter Master Sergeant Josiah H. Prescott of the New Hampshire 12th Infantry, one letter written by Private Martin Clark of the New York 5th Heavy Artillery, and an unknown individual named B.W. Clarke. One letter is from Nathaniel Cayes was a Private in the New Hampshire 12th Infantry who was at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and later the siege of Petersburg. There is also a prisoner receipt signed by Captain Thomas E. Barker of the 12th New Hampshire Volunteers (a notable officer in the regiment). One of the more notable letters in this series is written by a B.W. Clarke and discusses education in the local “Contraband Camp,” refugee camps for people escaping their enslavement and the Confederate army. The name “Contraband Camp” was used because during the Civil War the people who were escaping from their enslavement and taking refuge in the camps were still considered confiscated property of the South and their enslavers. There is also a letter from an unknown Union soldier named “Lydia” who wrote to his sister about camp life and possible military action near Point Lookout. This series contains one photograph of Private Charles A. Jones of the Maine 20th Infantry taken at Point Lookout. In addition, there is one diary and one photograph of unidentified individuals who were stationed or held at Point Lookout.
