Dr. Aubrey Land, a member of the History Department at the University of Maryland at College Park from 1958 to 1968, authored several books on colonial Maryland, including The Dulanys of Maryland and Bases of the Plantation Society. His papers contain extensive late colonial and early federal documentation on various shipping companies.

The Aubrey Land papers cover the years 1759 to 1881 with the bulk of the collection ranging from 1785 to 1810. The Papers contain bookkeeping records, invoices, legal statements, and correspondence of various American and European shipping companies, mainly based in Philadelphia, PA.

Aubrey Christian Land was a professor of history at the University of Maryland from 1958-1968; he also served as head of the department during that period. He was born September 2, 1912 in Panola County, Mississippi and died January 14, 1993 in Athens, Georgia. Following his tenure at the University of Maryland, he was a research professor at the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia. He was married to Helen Augusta Larabee (1911-1947) and following her death married Anne W. (1920-1998), a librarian.
Dr. Land received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Southern Illinois Teachers College in 1934 and a M.A. in 1938 and a Ph.D. in 1948 from the University of Iowa. Prior to his tenure at the University of Maryland, he served as an assistant professor of history at the Carnegie Institute of Technology from 1946-1949, associate professor at Vanderbilt University from 1950-1955, and full professor at the University of Nebraska from 1955-1957. In 1957-1958, he was a Fulbright Scholar at the London (England) School of Economics.
Dr. Land authored several books including Colonial Maryland (1981), a history, Bases of the Plantation Society (1969) and The Dulanys of Maryland (1955).

The Aubrey Land papers were donated to the University of Maryland Libraries in September 1972.
The materials have been placed in acid-free folders in acid-free boxes and arranged into four series.
