The Organization and Field Services Department of the AFL-CIO originated in the late 1930s within the AFL and the CIO in order to promote union success in elections after the Wagner Act was passed, as well as increase the number of unions and their membership through the operation of multiple regional offices. This collection is comprised of the charter files of the AFL and AFL-CIO which record the affiliation of national and international unions with the national body from 1886 to 1989. The records most frequently show the original application for affiliation and correspondence regarding changes in that affiliation over the years.
This collection is open to the public and must be used in the Special Collections reading room. Researchers must register and agree to copyright and privacy laws before using this collection.
