Content Description

This collection contains materials related to St. Teresa's Press and Mother Prioress Mary Joseph. St. Teresa's Press was established in 1965 by the Discalced Carmelite Nuns of Flemington in New Jersey under the direction of Mother Mary Joseph. Friends of the Carmelite Monastery were able to procure a printing press in 1965, and soon the sisters began printing as a means to support their community. This collection includes correspondence from 1967 to 2007 between Mother Mary Joseph and the donor Michael Lang. These letters provide a unique view of the work of the Press inside a cloistered monastery. The collection contains nearly all of St. Teresa's Press limited edition books before the press turned to making other printed materials. Most of the books contain prospectuses and/or thank you cards pressed between the endpapers, and many of the books have hand-illuminations that were influenced by the Benedictine nuns of Stanbrook Abbey's work in England. Also included in this collection is an honorary membership certificate and printed ephemera related to the history of the Little Giant 6 printing press.
