Michael Collier papers

Michael Collier is an author, editor, UMD's emeritus professor of English, Poet Laureate of Maryland (2001-2004), an editorial consultant for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt publishing (2002), and a former Director of the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference (1994-2017). This collection contains materials related to Collier's work as an author and editor and includes correspondence, book and poetry drafts from himself and other poets published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. In addition, there are materials related to Collier's travels as he attended various writer and poetry events, often performing readings and writing workshops.

This collection is minimally processed. This means that materials are in the same state we received them and have not been reviewed for content or condition. Scope and Contents

As an author and editor, Michael Collier created and edited many works of poetry. His writing includes books of poetry and essays: The Clasp and Other Poems; The Folded Heart; The Neighbor; The Ledge; Dark Wild Realm, An Individual History; My Bishop and Other Poems, and The Missing Mountain: New and Selected Poems, and a translation of Medea (2006). He edited three anthologies of poetry: The Wesleyan Tradition: Four Decades of American Poetry (1993) and The New American Poets: A Bread Loaf Anthology (2000), The New Bread Loaf Anthology of Contemporary American Poetry (2000). He also authored a collection of essays, Make Us Wave Back (2007).

The materials in this collection include personal correspondence and documents related to his work as an author, professor, and editor. Materials include correspondence, books, drafts, notes, newspaper clippings, magazines, financial records, photographs, audio cassettes, floppy disks, a CD, and memorabilia.

This collection was donated to the University of Maryland Libraries by Michael Collier on October 4, 2021.

Processing Information

This collection was minimally processed by Irene Lewis in 2024. Materials remain in their original order as it came to the Libraries, except for restricted materials which were separated and placed in boxes with other restricted materials. There were originally 32 boxes donated to the Libraries and in 2024, Irene Lewis consolidated them into 29 archival boxes. Documents loose in a box were placed in acid-free folders and titles were created based on the content following similar titling conventions from other folders. Damaged folders were replaced with new ones.
