Murray Bognovitz is a professional photographer with a commercial photography business that specializes in editorial, fine art, and portrait photography. In the early 1990s, he photographed portraits of various National Public Radio announcers, producers, and contributors. These portraits became the centerpiece of the NPR Exposure exhibit, a traveling exhibition that toured the United States from the early 1990s until the 2020s. His work has been displayed at the Salt Lake Art Center, the Durham Exhibitions, the National Portrait Gallery, and the United States Supreme Court in Washington, DC. Some of these portraits appeared in "National Public Radio: The Cast of Characters", written by Mary Collins in collaboration with another photographer, Jerome Liebling. Twenty-one of these portraits are featured in the book "On Air: The Triumph and Tumult of NPR" by Steve Oney (2025). This collection includes 53 black-and-white silver gelatin photos consisting of 32 photos measuring 14 x 11 inches and 21 photos measuring 10 x 8 inches.
This collection was donated to the University of Maryland Libraries by Murray Bognovitz on May 1, 2023.
This collection has been fully processed. The portraits arrived framed and packed in large wooden crates in Spring 2023. Preservation unpacked and unframed each portrait for storage and digitization purposes, and returned the photos to SCUA in Fall 2023. In 2024, Sarah Tedla arranged photographs alphabetically. The inventory list was created by using information that was created by the donor. Photographs were placed in acid-free folders in an acid-free box.
