John McNamara papers

John McNamara (1961-2018) was a journalist and high school boys' basketball coach in the DC Metro area. McNamara graduated from the University of Maryland in 1983 and was a sports writer throughout his career at The Herald-Mail in Hagerstown, MD, The Prince George's Journal and The Capital. He died in a shooting rampage at the Capital Gazette newsroom in Annapolis, Maryland on June 28, 2018. The John McNamara papers include research on high school boys’ basketball in the DC Metro area including news articles, first-person interviews, and notes regarding players and coaches famous locally, nationally, and internationally.

Content Description

The John McNamara papers contain textual records from throughout McNamara's career as a journalist in the DMV area. This collection includes articles and notes on local high school sports news with dates ranging from 1949-2018. The collection also includes early versions of chapters and notes for McNamara's book on Maryland Football coaching history, University of Maryland Football Vault: The History of the Terrapins, published in 2009.

This collection was donated to the University of Maryland Libraries by Andrea Chamblee on July 19,2022.

This collection was been minimally processed by Grace Baty in 2025. Aside from some rough groupings of similar material, the collection came to the Libraries in no particular order. In most cases, materials have not been arranged chronologically or grouped by format.
