The Interim College Park Senate was established in October 1970 to carry on the functions previously performed by the University Senate until its successor body, the College Park Campus Senate, could be formed. This was part of efforts to improve the system of campus governance and to reorganize each of the campuses of the University of Maryland system. The Interim College Park Senate records consist of agendas, minutes, correspondence, reports, committee files, membership rosters, and newspaper clippings documenting the activities of this temporary body.

The Interim College Park Senate records consist of material generated during that body's short period of existence while carrying out its duties. The records span the brief period from November 1970 to August 1971. The records include agendas, minutes, correspondence, reports, and newspaper clippings.
The Interim College Park Senate was established by referendum in October 1970 to carry on the functions previously performed by the University Senate until a permanent College Park Campus Senate could be created. The membership of the Interim College Park Senate was defined in terms of the College Park membership of the former University Senate.
The forerunner of the Interim College Park Senate was the University Senate, which officially operated from September 23, 1955 until November 12, 1970, but which also met unofficially from as early as 1919 until 1955. This governing body worked in conjunction with an administrative body known variously as the General Administrative Board, the University Council, the General Council, and the Council of Administration.
In the fall of 1970, efforts were made to improve the system of campus government, resulting in the reorganization of every campus of the University of Maryland system. On October 29, 1970 the University Senate passed an amendment to the existing Plan of Organization which established an Interim Senate to function until a permanent governing body for the College Park campus was established.
The Interim College Park Senate held its first meeting on November 19, 1970 and continued to operate through the summer of 1971, when the revised Plan of Organization created the College Park Campus Senate.
This collection is organized as four series:
The Interim College Park Senate records were initially transferred to the University of Maryland College Park Libraries in 1972, with transfers of additional material in 1983 and 1986 by the College Park Campus Senate.
The Interim College Park Senate records have been arranged based upon the original order in which they were received. Four series were identified and materials were then separated and arranged into their appropriate series. All unannotated, duplicate material was discarded. Some bound material was removed from its binding and integrated into foldered material. All paper clips and rubber bands were replaced with plastic clips. Records were refoldered into acidĀ¬free folders and boxed into acid?free containers. Finally, the guide was written.
