The Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) was established by the presidents of the Big Ten members in 1958 as the conference's academic counterpart. The CIC is a consortium of twelve research universities with the mission to advance academic excellence by sharing resources and promoting and coordinating collaborative activities across member universities. The records for the CIC conferences cover the period of 1990-2016 with the bulk of the materials from that period as well. The collection includes correspondences, programs, schedules, poster session lists, participant lists, abstracts, questions, maps, nametags, invitation cards, brochures, notes, and powerpoint slide printouts from various music education conferences throughout those years.

Materials from this collection must be used in the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library's Irving and Margery Morgan Lowens Special Collections Room during SCPA’s operating hours. The records for the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) Music Education Conference include correspondences, programs, schedules, poster session lists, participant lists, abstracts, questions, maps, nametags, invitation cards, brochures, notes, and powerpoint slide printouts. The strength of the collection is found within the correspondences, programs, schedules, and participant lists. These series give an overview of what university hosted conferences for the CIC from 1990 to 2016, what were the primary topics of discussion at these conferences, what research was presented at these conferences, and which individuals were present at the conference either as participants or staff.

Historical Note

The Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) was established by the presidents of the Big Ten members in 1958 as the conference's academic counterpart. The CIC is a consortium of 12 research universities, including 11 members of the Big Ten Conference and the University of Chicago, with the mission to advance academic excellence by sharing resources and promoting and coordinating collaborative activities across member universities. The organization was renamed the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) on June 29, 2016.

Their conferences focus on advancing music education amongst member universities by discussing resources for member universities, expanding learning opportunities, and sharing unique courses and programs. The conferences include addresses, poster sessions, and panels on various aspects of music education.
