Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "The beach at Kamakura, Japan with brown seaweed in small stacks covered by mats of rice straw. Some areas of seaweed spread out to dry appear in the middle distance. The dried seaweed is used in soups and stews chiefly but may also be cooked as we cook asparagus. Beyond the beach lies an upland in which road and railroad cuts stand vertically in the volcanic ash, as happens in loess."

The Great Buddha of Kamakura or Kamakura Daibutsu, with Allied troops viewing the statue. The Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "A giant Buddha, Daibutsu, made of cast bronze and iron, second largest in Japan (43 feet tall). The temple in which this was built 700 years ago has long since been destroyed. Kamakura."

Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "One of the buildings of the Shinto shrine to Hachiman at Kamakura. This sits before the main building and at a lower elevation along the way in from the main gate."
