Freshly cut Babelthuap agglomerate, a volcanic andesitic rock, on the west side of Arakabesang Island. Description provided by photographer Roy Simonson reads: "Near view of freshly exposed agglomerate in the cut shown in I25 with my red pocket knife to show scale. The dark gray, slightly bluish rock is composed of plagioclase feldspars and ferromagnesian minerals and ferromagnesian minerals such as augite and hornblende."

This was the administrative center for the Japanese mandated islands. The ruins left from the city, once with 12,000 people, mainly Japanese, are now obscured by vegetation. Very few buildings were usable; mostly foundations remain. The hilly- uplands are mainly red Latosols from andesite. Blue colors in the bay where the small ship is...
